Healing the Heartbreak of Newtown

The tragedy in Newtown has received tremendous media attention and has fueled heated debate about gun control and access to mental health services. At the same time, a dedicated group has been quietly providing effective relief and healing to those directly affected by the shootings.

The Newtown Trauma Relief Collaboration Project, led by Nick Ortner and Lori Leyden, was conceived to demonstrate and implement a comprehensive response to a local disaster, involving people and organizations at every level of the Newtown community. Its primary treatment modality has been Energy Psychology tapping (EFT), so it has put the claims of EFT practitioners to a serious test. Groups that come into disaster areas to provide therapeutic help have been notorious for offering services that are ineffective or even harmful, wasting invaluable energy, trust, and goodwill while leaving disappointment and a sense of hopelessness in their wake.

So far, the Newtown Project has served more than 200 traumatized individuals. In these documented sessions, every individual treated has experienced a decrease in self-reported stress levels. In the case of more than 30 first responders, parents who lost children, and parents whose children survived, significant trauma was cleared in only one to three sessions -- including intrusive memories, overwhelm, extreme emotional pain and hyper-arousal related to being present at Sandy Hook Elementary School on the day of the event.

As fate would have it, Nick Ortner, one of the most prominent leaders in the Energy Psychology field, lives in Newtown, and his mother is a psychologist at a nearby elementary school. They joined forces with the community leadership and formed the Newtown Project, along with Lori Leyden, whose disaster relief efforts with orphaned children in Rwanda through Project Light have held up to research scrutiny. The Newtown Project has trained and carefully supervised 24 volunteers in using EFT in the aftermath of the community's trauma. Donna's Daily Energy Medicine Routine is, by the way, a core element of the training these volunteers receive.

Nick's new book introducing people to Energy Psychology, The Tapping Solution, was released earlier this month. David and Donna, who hold Nick in high esteem, commented that the book provides "crystal-clear instruction on how to change the patterns of thought and behavior that hold you back, how to improve your relationships and your success in the endeavors that matter to you, and how to live a healthier, happier, more prosperous life." David has also had the honor of serving as a consultant to the Newtown Project since its inception.

How to Escape the Grip of Fear

2012 TWS Nick Ortner
When you are caught in fear, anxiety, or a phobia, tapping a point on the triple warmer meridian, which governs the fight or flight response, can alleviate the fear. The next time you feel afraid (time—about a minute):
1. Start tapping on the back side of your hand halfway between your wrist and fingers, aligned with the point where your fourth and fifth fingers converge. Tap for about a minute.
2. If you still feel fear, tap on the other hand.
Even for a longstanding phobia, repeatedly using this technique begins to alter the underlying energetic pattern.

The Three Thumps

The Three Thumps exercise is part of the Daily Energy Routine that Donna Eden shares in her book Energy Medicine (pgs. 74-80).

Three Thumps

This process consists of tapping on three different meridian points. Tapping on these points will restore your energy when you are tired, increase your vitality and keep your immune system strong. Use this process each morning and anytime during the day that you need a pick-me-up.

1) K-27 Points
Donna Eden Demonstrating
K-27 Points

To location these points, place the pointer finger of each hand on your collarbone and move your hands toward each other until you reach the two inside corners of your collarbone.  Drop straight down from these points to about an inch below your collarbone.  For most people, there is a soft spot or indentation there.

Tap or massage these points for about 30 seconds while breathing in and out.

Variation: in order to assist the energy to cross over from right to left and left to right... cross your arms and tap the left collar bone with the right fist and the right collar bone with the left fist.
Benefits of tapping K-27 points:
  • Increased energy
  • Feel more alert
  • Focus if you are having difficulty concentrating
Donna Eden Demonstrating
Thymus Gland
2) Thymus Gland

The Thymus Gland is located in middle of the chest, centered below the K-27 points.  It's also called the Tarzan Spot.

Massage or tap on the center of your sternum (center of chest on breast bone) for about 30 seconds while breathing deeply in and out.
Benefits of tapping the Thymus Gland:
  • Stimulate your energy system
  • Boost your immune system
  • Increase your strength and vitality
3) Spleen Points

Donna Eden Demonstrating
Spleen Points
Find the Spleen Points by moving your fingers down from your Thymus, out to your nipples, and straight down beneath your breasts.
The spleen points are located directly below each breast. Make fists and tap both points for about 20 seconds while breathing deeply in and out.

Benefits of tapping Spleen Points:
  • Lift your energy level
  • Balance your blood sugar
  • Strengthen your immune system

Holiday Stress

How do I maintain my center while interfacing with family and friends during large holiday gatherings?

Sparky is preparing to host Thanksgiving at her house tomorrow and is in search of how to keep her energies humming and triple warmer calm.  Sparky reached out to Donna and some EEM Certification Program graduates for advise on how to get through the holidays and keep her cool.

Hook-Up
Donna Eden wrote back saying:

"Above all, stay out of fear.  If you find yourself there, blow it out.....and then zip up with grand affirmations.  Stay hooked up, do a Celtic Weave as many times as you want during the day.  Do Faerie Flows and also do Blow Outs if something hits you, then zip up  with confidence.  Do not forget the 5 minute routine 2 or 3 times a day or any part of it that especially affects you.

If you get on overload, sit down and do a crown pull & hold your neurovasculars.  Hook up again."

Sparky's friend, Kelmie Blake, EEM Advanced Practitioner said:

"Get your energies solid before you get there - ground yourself (gaits, hook-up, belt flow), strengthen your aura (celtic weave, darth vader breath, more hook-ups), make sure people that zap you are not seated on your left (more vulnerable side), & cross over as much as you can (ankles, Tibetan prayer pose, etc).  The Triple Warmer/Spleen hug is good too - and if people ask what you are doing, you can just pretend you are cold.  ; )"

So what is Sparky going to do?  Lots of hooking up, weaving my energies and figure eights ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ all over me, the turkey and the whole house!

Another favorite that Sparky will include is the Mellow Mudra, it helps to calm triple warmer and cool down the heat.  Elsie Kerns, EEM Certified Practitioner, has a great video on YouTube demonstrating the Mellow Mudra.

What other things do you do to keep your cool during the holidays?
Happy Thanksgiving

Scrambled Energies & Time Change

Does the time change have your eN3rGiEs sCr@mBLed?

Sparky here, was trying to plan in advance for the time change so I wrote to Donna Eden, Dondi Dahlin, and some EEM Certified Practitioners asking what to do help my energies and meridians adjust to the time change on Sunday.

On Thursday, Kelmie Blake, EEM-AP wrote to Sparky saying "What I like to do is, a few days before the time change (as in, I should start this today [[Nov. 4]] ), I trace my meridians with the new time, to get my system used to it. So, if I were to trace my meridians right now, at 9 am, instead of starting with Spleen, I would start with Stomach.  I also usually do them another time before bed with the new time."

The EEM Certification Program Halloween
Party Winner "Scrambled Energies"

Well, Sparky failed to heed Kelmie's advise, zoomed through the beautiful, sunny fall weekend with my family and woke up this Monday morning with scrambled and confused energies compiled with "a case of the Monday's."  On the way to take the kiddo to school, scatter brained, I stopped at the warning sign that tells you there is a stop sign ahead, I drive this road every day! I shut my scarf in the door, I asked the boy three times if I gave him lunch money,  and turned down the wrong street.  I did a hook up and found a little relief, at least to drive the right direction. As I drove down the road I was thinking "gee, I should have followed Kelmie's advise on Thursday." As I sit down with the laptop for work, I come to my email and find a wealth of solutions for my scrambled energies! And, not so coincidentally, pictures from the EEM-CP Halloween Party with the winner being "Scrambled Energies."

Donna wrote to Sparky saying "After making sure that your energies are going forward, unscrambled and crossing over, hook up for at least a minute and trace the meridians from the new time of day.  Should be enough! If not, go to Energy Medicine and follow the tapping protocol ....but not waiting anytime in between. Tapping the ends of the meridians would be sufficient as well. And probably EFT tapping. But the suggestions other than EFT should work fabulously and they have in the past.  One particularly scrambled-energy person I know needed to do the 5 minute routine after tracing. Love, Donna"

Excited about that email, I start by doing the three thumps for a minute each and move on to read the rest of my emails.

Jyoti Rawlinson, EEM-CP wrote to Sparky saying "This is good when you're going through any kind of transition and is about letting go ...

Transition

For any kind of transition, e.g. coming down from a flight, if you're having a hard time ending things or feeling stuck. This exercise works with TW (Triple Warmer) to break the habit, as TW fights change:

  • Place hands behind the head, thumbs behind the ears. Drag thumbs (Lung)* up and around the ear crease line and end at the temples. Slide hands over Neurovaculars (frontal).
  • TW gets in alignment and helps you let go.
*Lung – this deals with letting go."

And Sue Powell, EEM-CP wrote saying "I agree with Kelmie - that is the most straight forward thing to do."

Sparky having her meridians traced
at the San Diego 5-Day.
Here's what I did to get the "Spark" back in "Sparky" on this scrambled Monday following the time change.
  • Three thumps, again, for a minute each
  • Homolateral Cross Crawl
  • Wayne Cook
These got my energies unscrambled and crossing over as Donna suggested.  Now to get them flowing with the new rhythm.
  • Hook up, holding it for over a minute and experiencing deep sighs of breath and alignment
  • Trace Meridians
  • Connecting Heaven and Earth
  • Figure eights all around
  • Transition exercise as described by Jyoti, above
Whew! Sparky found her spark through a jolt of Energy Medicine.

A Note From Donna Eden On Following Instructions Precisely

On Following Instructions Precisely

By Donna Eden

When I cooked my very first meal for David's parents in 1977, his mother, Edith, wanted the recipe. This put me into a stressful dilemma. I have always been considered a very good cook, but I've never stayed with a recipe. I may on rare occasions consult a recipe, but I never follow one. Why would you follow a recipe when your instincts tell you what to do at each choice point for the substance and taste you want for these guests for this meal? Being asked to describe the exercises used in Eden Energy Medicine presented the same kind of dilemma as Edith's request for my "recipe."

I recognize that it is necessary to lay out the procedures. And it is necessary to have a way, such as energy testing, to know what effect they had. But I never do the same procedure in exactly the same way twice. I always follow the energies and let them and how they are responding dictate my work. The procedures are useful. Remembering what has worked in the past when coming up against something like a stubborn Triple Warmer response kept me from having to keep re-inventing the wheel. But I always let my body and the energies of my client's body speak to me and influence how I do the procedures.

In mastering a system, you do need to learn the established procedures before you can move beyond them. They are the "default," and you can always come back to them and wind up with generally good results. But even early on, trust your instincts more than what is written. If it says "Hold the Neurovascular points for two minutes” and you feel that is not enough, or if you feel what is needed has been accomplished after a minute, trust that and verify with an energy test. The energies are talking to you. Learn their language and learn how to listen to them. That language is more important for mastering Eden Energy Medicine than any words I have written.

Rhythmic Eights

Rhythmic Eights
(time about 1 minute)

Where the Homolateral Crossover addresses large patterns within the Celtic weave, doing Rhythmic Eights brings all of the energies, from those that surround you down to those of individual cells, into a crossover pattern. If you are having difficulty relaxing, are caught up in your daily troubles, or are just feeling the blahs, Rhythmic Eights are fun to do and are always a good energy boost. It adds a touch of joy to do them to music that makes you want to move.

1. With your hands hanging, sway your body shifting your weight from one hip to the other, moving to music or moving as if you are moving to music.

2. Let your arms sway with your body. You will notice that there is a natural figure eight movement in both your arms and body as you sway from side to side. Let your arms move out farther so they are swinging wide.

3. Stretch your hands out in front of you and make a sideways figure eight with your arms. Go up and over on the right, circle down, and then again up and over to the right. Twist at the waist in the direction toward which you are reaching, allowing your body's rhythm to move with your arms. It is more like a free-form dance than a tightly patterned exercise.

Several Rhythmic Eights will help get the left and right-brain hemispheres into better communication. This technique is used in "Educational Kinesiology," an application of Energy Medicine that helps children with dyslexia and other learning handicaps.

This exercise can be found on page 70 of Donna Eden's Energy Medicine for Women book., and page 201 or Energy Medicine 2008 edition.

HOMOLATERAL CROSSOVER REPATTERNING

When your energies are moving straight up and down each side of your body, like parallel lines, the pattern is referred to as homolateral. (Definition: pertaining to or situated on the same side.) If you are homolateral, you are operating at less than 50% efficiency. You cannot get well if your energies are homolateral. It is that simple.

Do this routine each day until the new pattern becomes established. (If you can, do it twice!)

1. Begin with the Three Thumps and a full body “reach for the stars” stretch.

2. March in place, lifting right arm with right leg and then left arm with left leg.

3. Breathe deeply throughout the entire routine.

4. After about 12 lifts of the arms and legs in this homolateral pattern (right arm with right leg and left arm with left leg), stop, pause (take a deep breath in and out), and then change the pattern to a normal Cross Crawl (lifting opposite arms and legs) for about 12 lifts.

5. Repeat the pattern twice more.

6. Anchor it with an additional dozen Cross Crawls. End with the Three Thumps.

Note: These instructions can be easily adapted so the exercise can be done when you are sitting or lying down.

The Brazilian Toe Technique

The Brazilian Toe Technique uses acupressure points to promote deep relaxation and activates the release of toxins. This simple method can help reduce emotional stress and imbalances, and overall physical pain and achiness. This technique also reduces side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, including restless leg syndrome, insomnia, nausea, and edema.

NOTE: Unless you are a yoga master, you will need a partner for this technique!

Brazilian Toe Technique.

With the person you will be working on lying on their back, position yourself at their feet.

1) Place your thumbs beneath their middle toes and your middle fingers on top of the same toes, on the toenails. Hold lightly for two to three minutes. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

2) Slide your thumbs to the bottom of their fourth toes, then slide your fourth (or ring) fingers on top of the fourth toes. Hold lightly for two to three minutes. Continue the same breathing.

3) Slide your thumbs beneath the little toes, then slide your little fingers on top of the toenails. Hold lightly for two to three minutes.

4) Slide your thumbs beneath the second toes, then slide your index fingers on top of the toenails of their second toes. Hold lightly for two to three minutes.

5) Slide your thumbs beneath their big toes, then place your index fingers and your middle fingers so that one is on each side of the base of the toenails of the big toes. Hold lightly for two to three minutes.

Spinal Flush

Spinal Flush (Neurolymphatic Massage)

Energize!
Strengthen your immune system!
Reduce built up stress!

How? Find a friend and:

1) Lie face down or stand three to four feet from a wall and lean into it, your hands supporting you. This helps stabilize your body while a partner applies pressure to your back.

2) Have your partner deeply massage the notches between each vertebra, about an inch on either side of your spine, from the base of your neck to the bottom of the sacrum. (If you are too gentle or tentative, this procedure can be counter productive.) The thumbs or middle fingers should be used to apply deep pressure in a circular motion for at least three seconds on each point.

3) After reaching the sacrum, repeat the massage or complete it by "sweeping" the energies down their body. (With an open hand, sweep from shoulders to feet two or three times.)

This exercise is located on page 93 of Energy Medicine by Donna Eden and also in the Energy Medicine Kit Tracks 9,15 of the DVD.

The Neurovascular Hold

OMG! Post holidaze stress got your knickers in a twist?

The Neurovascular Hold

When you are stressed or feeling blue, this technique releases tension from your body as well as from your mind. Your body still reacts to threat and stress as our ancestors' bodies did millions of years age. Running away or fighting required that the blood rush away from the brain and into the body to support quick action. You are designed to act in an emergency, not to think. The Neurovascular Hold interrupts the fight-or-flight response, bringing blood back to your forebrain so you can think more clearly.

1. Sitting or lying down, tune in to a stress you are feeling or focus on as stressful thought, memory, or situation.

2. Place your thumbs at your temples and the pads of your fingers on your forehead, on the bony area above your eyebrows.

3. Hold here softly for up to three minutes, breathing deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Alternative: Place the palm of one hand across your forehead and the palm of your other hand across the back of your head. Again, hold softly for up to three minutes, breathing deeply.

Donna Eden describes the Hook-up exercise

The Hook-up is great to do any time your energies are feeling a bit “off.”

• The Hook-up creates a connection between your central meridian (which sends energy up the front of your body) and governing meridian (which sends energy up your spine), bridging the energies between the front and back of your body and between your head and torso.
• It strengthens your aura.
• It increases your coordination.
The Hook-up is one of the most powerful tools I know for quickly centering myself. I t has immediate neurological consequences. Several of my students have reported using it with someone who has started to seizure and seen the seizure stop within 15-20 seconds.

To do the Hook-up, breathe in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth (time—15 to 20 seconds.

1. Place the middle finger of one hand on your third eye (between your eyebrows above the bridge of your nose).
2. Place the middle finger of the other hand in your navel.
3. Gently press each finger into your skin, pull it upward, and hold for 15-20 seconds. Often a spontaneous sigh or deep breath signals that the energies have hooked up.

This exercise can be found on page 98-99 of Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine Book.

How to Overcome Despair Through Spiritual Connection

Heaven Rushing In:

Whenever you are in despair, feeling alone, sick at a crossroads, suffering with physical pain, in anguish because of an illness that will not heal, or otherwise unable to find the answers you ache to find, the following can be an uplifting practice. It can put you in touch with the sacred dimension of your life, infuse you with the knowledge that you are not alone, and give you the odd comfort of realizing that all you see is only a glimpse of a larger picture.

If at all possible, do this out in nature, perhaps under the stars, or in another setting that feels sacred. For Donna , this is like a prayer. She says it connects her with the spiritual realm, and she calls it Heaven Rushing In (time—2 minutes or longer):

1. Stand tall. Take a moment to ground yourself by spreading your fingers on your thighs, breathing deeply, feeling your feet on the ground, and being conscious of your connection to the Earth as the energy pours out of your fingers, down your thighs, and into the ground. You are preparing yourself to make a sacred connection.

2. Take a deep breath in, open your arms wide, and bring them into a prayer position in front of your chest. Exhale.

3. With another deep breath open your arms wide and lift them. Look to the heavens. Reach toward heaven as heaven reaches back to you. Release your breath. Bask in the knowledge that you are not alone in this universe and that you are worthy of this blessing from the heavens. You may feel a tingle, a buzz, or heat in your hands. You are touching heaven with your hands, and you are inviting healing energies from the cosmos.

4. Scoop this energy into your arms and bring your hands into the middle of your chest. There is a vortex here called Heaven Rushing In, and “heaven” rushes into your heart with healing, with a glimpse of your true nature, and with a peek into who you are in the larger plan. Even when you do not receive guidance or inspiration, know that they will unfold in their perfect time.

5 If there is a specific area in your body that needs healing place your charged hands over that area and let the energies stream in.

This exercise and many others can be found in Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine book.

How to Overcome Nervousness About an Upcoming Presentation, Job Interview or Confrontation!

How to Overcome Nervousness About an Upcoming Presentation, Job Interview or Confrontation!

The Three Thumps (page 74 of the Energy Medicine book) , The Wayne Cook Posture (page 84), and a vigorous Cross Crawl (page 80) are a potent one-two- three routine for unscrambling your energy field, crossing the energies in the right-and left- brain hemispheres, and moving stress hormones out of your system. Use it while preparing for the event, and just prior to it, zip yourself up with an affirmation (page 94).

The Three Thumps:

1. Use several fingers or knuckles to tap the spots shown in the pictures. Tap vigorously on each set of spots.

Focus on breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth during all the tapping.

2. To locate K-27 points place your fingers on your collarbone and move them inward towards the U-shaped notch at the top of your breastbone. Move your fingers to the bottom of the U and then move down and out about an inch to find the spots. Tap or massage for ten to fifteen seconds.

3. Place the fingers of either or both hands in the center of your sternum at the thymus gland. Tap there for fifteen to twenty seconds with your fingers or your knuckles.

4. Tap the Neurolymphatic Spleen points, beneath the breasts and down one rib, for fifteen seconds. Alternately, tap the spleen acupuncture points, located on the side of the body about four inches down from the arm pits, for fifteen seconds. If either set is more tender use these points in the future.

The Wayne Cook Posture:

1. Place your left foot over your right knee. Wrap you right hand around the front of your left ankle and your left hand over the ball of your left foot, with your fingers curled around the sides of the foot.

2. Breathe in slowly through your nose, letting the breath lift your body as you breathe in. At the same time, pull your leg toward you, creating a stretch. As you exhale, breathe out of your mouth slowly, letting your body relax. Repeat this slow breathing and stretching four or five times.

3. Switch to the other foot. Place your right foot over your left knee. Wrap your left hand around the front of your right ankle and your right hand over the ball of your right foot, with your fingers curled around the side of your foot. Use the same breathing.

4. Uncross your legs and “steeple” your fingertips together so they form a pyramid. Bring your thumbs to rest on your “third eye” just above the bridge of your nose. Breathe slowly and deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth, about three or four full breaths.

5. On the last exhalation, curl your fingers into the middle of your forehead and separate them, firmly and pleasantly, pulling across your forehead to your temples.

6. Slowly bring your hands down in front of you. Surrender into your own breathing.

The Cross Crawl:

1. While standing, lift your right arm and left leg simultaneously.

2. As you let them down, raise your left arm and right leg. If you are unable to do this because of a physical disability, there is an alternative. While sitting, lift your right knee and touch it with your left hand. Then lower them, lift your left leg, and touch it with your right hand.

3. Repeat, this time exaggerating the lift of your leg and the swing of your arm across the midline to the opposite side of your body.

The Zip-up:

1. Place your hands at the bottom end of the central meridian, which is at your pubic bone

2. Inhale deeply as you simultaneously move your hands, slowly and with deliberation, straight up the center of your body, to your lower lip, where the meridian ends.

3. By continuing upward, however, bringing your hands past your lips and exuberantly raising them into the sky, you connect your central meridian with your aura and with forces that are beyond you.

4. Circle your arms back down to your pelvis

5. Repeat three times
